The Power of Parent's Voice

How Your Words Shape Your Child's Future

Words have long lasting impact
Words have long lasting impact

In one of my coaching sessions, a client shared the information in quotes on this photo.

This got me thinking and thinking a lot: parents have a lot of influence on their children's lives. When children are not taught to be independent, their voices not heard, feeling unloved and unsupported, it is highly likely that they struggle to make decisions for themselves, they become dependent on others, they tend to seek external validation for fear of rejection and abandonment. They can end up in long term careers that they do not like. This seems to be a pattern especially with the African families where children want to 'make their parents happy'. This could contribute to Gallup's (2019) finding from a poll that 85% of people globally are not satisfied with their jobs.

My client started the first year at uni studying a law degree that she didn't enjoy and she 'secretly' switched to the course she enjoys without telling her parents.

TIPS to Parents who are authority figures to their children:

📌Teach your child(ren) independence skills from a young age

📌 Acknowledge your child's feelings and opinions

📌Have honest conversations with your children using age appropriate language

📌Provide a nurturing, loving, safe and secure home environment

📌Make your children feel valued and worthy.

As an adult, you may find yourself or someone you know in a profession that you don’t like. REFLECT on the following points:

👉 Pause and Reflect: ask yourself: What drains me? What excites me, even if I don’t get paid

👉 Identify Core Values: Purpose often aligns with personal values.

👉 Reconnect with Childhood Passions: What did you enjoy doing before work and life responsibilities took over?

👉 Experiment with Side Projects or upgrade skills: Instead of quitting a job abruptly, try volunteering, freelancing, starting a side project in areas of interest or train to gain more skills.

👉 Redefine Success: Many people stay in careers due to societal expectations (status, salary, security).

👉 Seek Professional Support: A career coach, therapist, or mentor can help challenge limiting beliefs and clarify direction.
